Being smart with emotions

The purpose of the study was to identify how emotional intelligence influences on academic performance and how it differs according to gender. The work was conducted in 455 adolescents attending the last two years of secondary education schools in the city of Lima. Emotional intelligence was measured with the emotional quotient inventory BarOn and school performance with average grades for the main courses. The results indicate that the total emotional quotient has a positive influence on school performance. With respect to gender differences between genders in the intrapersonal, interpersonal, stress management and general mood components were observed.
